Do you want to know which driving licence you need for a moped, scooter or motorcycle in Belgium? At United Scooters, we provide you with the best tailored advice. Below you will find an overview of all driving licences and the corresponding requirements.

Which license allows you to operate which two-wheeler?

Moped class A - No driving licence required

  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Max. 50 cc of electric motor.
  • Maximum speed: 25 km/h.
  • Helmet required.

Moped class B - AM licence required

  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Max. 50 cc of electric motor.
  • Maximum speed: 45 km/h.
  • AM driving licence required (or driving licence B, which automatically includes AM).
  • Helmet required.

Light motorcycles (max. 125 cc or 11 kW) - A1 licence required

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Engines up to 125 cc and a maximum of 11 kW (15 hp), with a maximum of 0.1 kW/kg.
  • Driving licence A1 required.
  • Path with 9 hours of driving lessons: You only take the practical exam on private property. 

    • Do you pass? Then you receive a provisional license that allows you to practice. After at least a month, you take another exam on public roads for your permanent license.
  • Path with 12 hours of driving lessons: You take the exam immediately on both private property and public roads. 

    • Do you pass? Then you immediately have your permanent license.

Medium motorcycles (max. 35 kW) - A2 licence required

  • Minimum age: 20 years
  • Motors up to 35 kW and max. 0.2 kW/kg.
  • Motorcycle licence A2 required.
  • Driving training: Same choice in driving training (9 or 12 hours) as with the A1 license.
  • Progression: Have you had your A1 license for 2 years? Then after 4 hours of extra driving lessons, you can take the exam for A2 immediately.

Heavy motorcycles (no power restriction) - Category A licence required

  • Minimum age: 24 years (or 22 years if you have held the A2 license for at least 2 years)
  • Engines without power limitation.
  • Motorcycle licence A required.
  • Driving training: Same choice in driving training (9 or 12 hours) as with the other categories.
  • Progression: Have you had your A2 license for 2 years? Then after 4 hours of extra driving lessons, you can take the exam for A immediately.

What can you drive with a category B driving licence?

Driving licence B obtained before 1 January 1989

  • You may operate all motorcycles.
  • Note: We strongly recommend a short practical training before you safely hit the road.

Driving licence B obtained before 1 May 2011

  • You may ride motorcycles from category A1 (max. 11 kW, max. 0.1 kW/kg).
  • You may drive tricycles up to 15 kW (valid only in Belgium).
  • Important: This automatic admission is only valid on Belgian territory.

Driving licence B obtained after 1 May 2011

  • You must have held your B license for at least 2 years.
  • You take 4 hours of mandatory driving lessons through an accredited driving school (no exam is required).
  • You will receive the mention 'Code 372' on your driver's license. This gives you the right to ride a 125 cc motorcycle or scooter.
  • Important: Code 372 is only valid in Belgium. Do you want to take the motorcycle or scooter abroad? Then you need a full European A1 driver's license (including theory and practical exams).


Important: All mopeds and light four-wheelers must be registered and have a number plate.
