The small piece of rubber that touches the road – the so-called contact patch or contact surface – determines your grip, your safety, and your riding pleasure. But which tyre is best suited to your riding style and the surface you ride on? In this blog post, we explain the three main types of tyres: Road, Dual Sport, and Off-Road.
1. Road Tyres (Street Tyres): Maximum Grip on Asphalt
Are you someone who mainly rides in the city or enjoys long tours on well-paved roads? Then the Road tyre (street tyre) is your ideal choice.
The profile: These tyres have relatively few grooves. The little profile that exists mainly serves to drain water during a rain shower.
Contact surface (Contact Patch): Wide and soft. Because the tyre is smoother, a larger surface area touches the asphalt. This provides maximum friction and thus excellent grip.
Advantages: They offer the least rolling resistance, resulting in a smooth ride, lower fuel consumption, and excellent stability in corners.
Ideal for: Commuting, city scooters, and touring motorcycles.
2. Dual Sport Tyres (Allroad): The Perfect Balance
Are you adventurous and do you not want to be held back when the asphalt turns into an unpaved gravel path? Then you end up with the Dual Sport tyres, also known as Allroad tyres.
The profile: This is the golden mean. They have deeper and wider grooves than a street tyre, but still enough smooth blocks to ride comfortably on the road.
Contact surface: Versatile. The pattern is designed to adapt to changing conditions.
Advantages: These tyres offer the ultimate balance. You have enough grip and comfort on the motorway, but also enough traction when you take a forest path or gravel road. The performance is 'intermediate' (average in both worlds).
Ideal for: Adventure bikes, scramblers and robust crossover scooters.
3. Off-Road Tyres (Knobby Tyres): For the Rough Work
For the real mud eaters and off-road enthusiasts who prefer to avoid asphalt, there are the Off-Road tyres(knobby tyres).
The profile: Very deep and aggressive, characterised by large rubber blocks (knobs) with plenty of space in between.
Contact surface: Aggressive and deep. The knobs act like claws that dig into sand, mud or earth.
Advantages: They provide unparalleled traction and grip on soft, loose surfaces.
Disadvantages on the road: On flat asphalt, the contact surface is minimal. This results in less grip, more rolling noise, vibrations, and a much faster wear of your tyres.
Ideal for: Enduro, motocross and rides that consist of 80-100% off-road terrain.
