Making your class A moped (25 km/h) run a bit faster may seem harmless, but in Belgium the rules are unforgiving. Since the introduction of license plates, the chance of being caught is greater than ever.

This hangs over your head during a check:

⚙️ The Roller Bench (Curtest)

Are you stopped? Then your scooter goes on the roller bench. The police apply a small technical margin, but if you exceed that, you're in trouble. Does your class A suddenly go 45 km/h? Then it is no longer considered a moped by law, but a motorcycle for which you do not have the papers.

⚖️ The Legal Hammer

As soon as the roller bench turns red, the procedure starts:

  • Seizure:You will immediately lose your scooter for usually30 days. The towing and storage costs? You pay those.

  • Not compliant:Your vehicle no longer meets the technical requirements of the manufacturer.

  • Driving without a license:For a class A, you do not need a license, but due to the higher speed, you suddenly do need one. Result: a serious offense.

  • Insurance void:This is the most dangerous. You are insured for 25 km/h. Above that, your policy is invalid.

💸 The Financial Hangover

Costs accumulate faster than your speedometer:

  • Fines:Expect amounts from€ 400 to € 2,000(after increments).

  • Towing service invoice:Expect€ 150 to € 300.

  • Repair costs:You need to restore the moped to its original state before you get it back.

⚠️ The horror scenario: An accident

A fine is annoying, but an accident is a disaster. Does an expert determine that your scooter has been driven up?

  1. The insurance refuses to pay out.

  2. The insurer recovers all damages from the other partyyou.

In the case of bodily injury, we are not talking about hundreds of euros, but abouttens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of eurosthat you will pay off for the rest of your life.

Conclusion:Those few extra kilometers per hour are not worth your driver's license, your bank account, and your future.

Our advice:Want to go faster? Get your AM or A1 driver's license and go legally on the road. Safety and peace of mind make for the most pleasant ride. And it's cheaper than getting 'caught' ...
