Are you planning to purchase a moped or motorcycle? Then it is essential to be well-informed about the tax obligations in advance. In Belgium, the costs depend not only on the type of vehicle you choose but also on the region where you are domiciled.

1. Mopeds (Class A & B)

For mopeds, the regulations are federally the same. There is no regional difference in

taxation.

Note: For each new registration, you pay a one-time administration fee of € 30 to the DIV for your license plate.


2. Motorcycles (> 50cc): Tax on Registration (BIV)

This is the biggest point of difference between the regions. The BIV is paid once upon registration.

Flanders applies a fixed rate regardless of power.

In Wallonia/Brussels, the BIV for second-hand motorcycles decreases based on age (10% per year of age, with a minimum of € 61.50).

The annual tax is currently largely similar for all regions.

4. Summary & Advice

  • Do you live in Flanders? Then it doesn't matter how powerful your engine is for the BIV. You always pay the low fixed rate.
  • Do you live in Wallonia or Brussels? Then be very careful when purchasing a motorcycle over 100 kW (136 hp). The BIV jump there is enormous (€ 495 to € 1,239).
  • Biggest saving: A 125cc motorcycle is exempt from annual tax throughout Belgium and is therefore the most economical motorized vehicle.
