All about Driving Licenses

For scooters, mopeds and motorcycle

Do you want to know which driving licence you need for a moped, scooter or motorcycle in Belgium? At United Scooters, we provide you with the best tailored advice. Below you will find an overview of all driving licences and the corresponding requirements.

Which moped or motorcycle are you allowed to ride?

Moped class A - No driving licence required

  • Max. 50 cc of electric motor.
  • Maximum speed: 25 km/h.
  • Helmet required.

Moped class B - AM licence required

  • Max. 50 cc of electric motor.
  • Maximum speed: 45 km/h.
  • AM driving licence required (or driving licence B, which automatically includes AM).
  • Helmet required.

Light motorcycles (max. 125 cc or 11 kW) - A1 licence required

  • Engines up to 125 cc and a maximum of 11 kW (15 hp), with a maximum of 0.1 kW/kg.
  • Driving licence A1 required.
  • 9 hours of driving instruction for practical exam on private land.
  • 3 hours of extra driving lessons for the test on the public road.

Medium motorcycles (max. 35 kW) - A2 licence required

  • Motors up to 35 kW and max. 0.2 kW/kg.
  • Motorcycle licence A2 required.
  • Same driving training as with A1.
  • Have you had your A1 driving licence for 2 years? Then you can take the test after 4 extra lessons.

Heavy motorcycles (no power restriction) - Category A licence required

  • Engines without power limitation.
  • Motorcycle licence A required.
  • From 24 years old (or 22 years old with at least 2 years of A2 experience).
  • Same minimum number of driving lesson hours as in other categories.
  • With 2 years of A2 driving licence, you may take the exam after 4 hours of lessons.

What can you drive with a category B driving licence?

Driving licence B obtained before 1 January 1989

  • You may operate all motorcycles.
  • We strongly recommend training before you get on a motorcycle.

Driving licence B obtained before 1 May 2011

  • You may ride motorcycles from category A1 (max. 11 kW, max. 0.1 kW/kg).
  • You may drive tricycles up to 15 kW (valid only in Belgium).

Driving licence B obtained after 1 May 2011

  • At least 2 years of driving licence B required.
  • 4 hours of driving lessons required at an accredited driving school for category A1.

Important: All mopeds and light four-wheelers must be registered and have a number plate.
