Driving Licenses

AM – Minimum 16 years old

This “youth permit” allows anyone aged 16 and over to drive a moped, scooter, light quadricycle and light motorcycle of up to 4 kW. The maximum speed is 45 km/h. You must take a minimum of 4 hours of driving lessons, including 2 on public roads. A person with a B permit automatically has an AM permit.

A1 – From 18 years old

This permit is available to anyone over the age of 18. The maximum power is 11 kW. The ratio between weight and power cannot exceed 0.1 kW/kg. The provisional license is valid for 1 year and requires 9 hours of driving lessons before being able to take the practical test on private land. You have to add 3 hours to pass the exam on the public road.

A2 – From 20 years old

The A2 license is available to anyone over the age of 20. The license allows you to drive more powerful motorcycles, with a maximum power of 35 kW and a power-to-weight ratio of maximum 0.2 kW/kg. The law also says that the engine cannot be derived from a model displaying more than twice its restricted power. As for the A1 licence, you have to take 9 hours of driving lessons. A person who already has an A1 license can take the practical exam (provisional licence) after 4 hours of lessons.

A – Over 24 years old

For drivers over 24 years old, the A license is required for motorcycles whose power exceeds 35 kW. This age limit is reduced to 22 years for those who have held the A2 license for at least 2 years. The law also provides for the same minimum of 9 hours of driving lessons as for the A1 and A2 licenses. A person who has had an A2 license for more than 2 years can take their exam after 4 hours of lessons.

What type of motorcycle can you ride if you have a B license?

• License obtained before January 1, 1989

The world of motorcycles opens up to you. We obviously advise you to take courses before getting on a motorcycle…

• License obtained before May 1, 2011

You can ride with vehicles of category A1: motorcycles with a maximum power of 11 kW and a weight/power ratio of maximum 0.1 kW/kg. You can also drive tricycles of maximum 15 kW (only in Belgium).

• License obtained after May 1, 2011 Have you had your license for at least 2 years? Then you can drive category A1 vehicles provided you follow 4 hours of driving lessons in a recognized school

Without license ?

Mopeds are divided into two categories: Class A and Class B.

Class A mopeds are all two- or three-wheeled vehicles with a maximum engine capacity of 50 cc or an electric motor with a maximum speed of 25 km/h.

For class A mopeds you do not need a driver's license. Class B mopeds are all two- or three-wheeled vehicles with a maximum engine capacity of 50 cc or an electric motor with a maximum speed of 45 km/h. To ride a class B moped, you must have an AM driving license (the old A3 license remains valid). For class A and B cyclists, wearing a helmet is compulsory. All mopeds and light quadricycles must have a license plate.

On-board documents If you travel by moped on public roads, you should always have with you: your identity card your driver's license (if you ride a class B moped) your insurance certificate
